 Oxygen—What a Flame!
Student Laboratory Kit
By: Bruce Mattson
Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska
Oxygen—we need it to survive! Learn how O2 is prepared and observe some of its interesting properties. Generate microscale amounts (50–60 mL) of O2 gas in syringes by performing a catalytic decomposition reaction. Observe how oxygen supports combustion, burn steel wool in an oxygen-rich flame, and perform the classic “blue bottle” oxidation experiment in the syringe. Includes Instructor’s Notes, reproducible student handouts and all necessary chemicals and specialized materials.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. The Chemistry of Gases Classroom Equipment Kit (AP5951) is needed to perform this lab and is available separately.

Equipment—Super Value Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Student equipment kit is designed to accompany any or all of the Flinn Chemistry of Gases student laboratory kits (AP5950, AP5958, AP5959). One equipment kit contains enough reusable materials for 15 lab groups. Students safely generate microscale quantities of gases in syringes and observe properties and reactions of the gas. Includes 15 sets of reusable equipment—15 syringes, 15 tip caps, 15 gas-generating vial caps and 15 pieces of latex tubing.
Super Value Kit is complete for 15 student groups. All materials are reusable.
