  Surface Tension Jar—
Demonstration Kit
By: Patrick Funk
Pickerington High School, Pickerington, OH
Quickly and easily demonstrate the remarkable properties of surface tension, air pressure, and cohesion using a simple jar. Place a lami- nated card over the screen-covered mouth of a jar. Flip the jar over and observe as the card stays in place. Remove the card and watch the water appear to “float” on air! This demonstration is very easy to perform, and it shows an incredible amount of science. Complete with instructions and extensions to the activity.
Concepts: Surface tension, air pressure, cohesion. Time Required: 10 minutes
Materials Provided: Jar, screen, laminated card.

                                          The Disappearing Beaker—
Demonstration Kit
By: Lee Marek, Retired
Naperville High School, Naperville, IL
Set a beaker in another, pour in pale yellow oil and the beaker disap- pears! In this entertaining demonstration of refractive index, show your students that there’s more to light travel than “meets the eye.” By matching the index of refraction of glass with canola oil, glass objects fade from sight. Teacher Demonstration Notes included.
Concepts: Index of refraction, magnification.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Materials Provided: Unmarked Pyrex® beaker, Pyrex test tube, red and green pop beads, magnifying lens and canola oil.

Water Spouts—
Kinetic vs. Potential Energy—
A Torricelli’s Law Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Science includes observation that sparks curiosity. If a full water bottle has three outlets—one at the top, one in the middle and one near the bottom—will the water flow from each outlet in the same manner? Construct a spouting bottle to demonstrate Torricelli’s law. Students will learn about the concepts of kinetic energy, potential energy and projectile motion. Demonstration kit comes complete with instructions, teaching information, a reproducible student handout and answers for the teacher.
Concepts: Potential vs. kinetic energy, Bernoulli’s law, Torricelli’s law, projectile motion.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Materials Provided: 1-L soda bottle with cap, 30-cm ruler.
