 Concentration and Molarity—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students will use acid–base titrations to determine the concentration of unknown acid and base solutions in this laboratory activity. First, students will determine the concentration of an unknown hydrochloric acid solution by titrating with a THAM solution they prepare from their own calculations. Then, they will determine the concentration of an unknown sodium hydroxide solution by titrating with a known sulfuric acid solution. Calculations are involved for both titrations, so students will get practice with titration calculations involving both monoprotic and diprotic acids. Six unknown solutions are included in the kit—three acid solutions and three base solutions. Kit also includes reproducible student handouts with detailed background section covering titration calculations and complete notes with sample calculations and answers to questions, plus all chemicals needed to perform the lab.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs. Fifteen reusable, 24-well reaction plates are needed and available separately.
Determination of the Ksp of Ca(OH)2—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Equilibrium and equilibrium constant calculations often confuse students. Use this microscale experiment to help students understand the relation- ship between the equilibrium constant and solubility. Students prepare serial dilutions of calcium nitrate in separate wells of a reaction strip, and then combine these with equal volumes of a standard sodium hydrox- ide solution. Precipitation occurs in the wells where the Ksp of calcium hydroxide is exceeded. The first well with no precipitate is identified as saturated, and the concentrations of calcium and hydroxide ions in this well are used to calculate the Ksp value. Students repeat the process from the other direction, using serial dilutions of sodium hydroxide, in order to determine if the equilibrium constant is really a constant. The microscale lab is easy to set up, quick to perform and gives reliable and reproducible results. Includes Notes with sample data and answers to all questions, extensive background material, reproducible student handouts, and all necessary chemicals and consumable supplies.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Factors Affecting Solubility—
Guided-Inquiry Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Why is it that some solids take so much longer to dissolve than others? What factors affect the rate at which a solute dissolves in solution? In this labora- tory activity, students will investigate the effects of stirring, temperature, surface area and the amount of solute already dissolved in solution on the rate of dissolving. This activity works well as an open-ended, inquiry-based lab, but may also be performed as a standard laboratory activity— instructions are included for both formats. Includes reproducible student handouts, background information and complete Notes with sample data and answers to questions, plus all chemicals needed to perform the lab.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
