“Chem”-eleon Indicators—Science and Art with Acids and Bases— Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Watch paper chameleons magically change color with the help of some basic—and acidic—chemistry. Students spot solutions of various household substances on specially treated blotting paper, then estimate the pH of each by the color produced. Creativity flows as students then combine their scientific and artistic skills to make unique, colorful “chem”-eleons. A great integrated learning activity! Includes one acid and one base solution, five red cabbage indicator color charts, complete instructions with reproducible student handouts, valuable Instructor’s Notes, and enough materials to make 30 chameleons.
Complete for 30 students working individually. Common household acids and bases are suggested, but not included.
Exploring a Chemical Reaction
in a Toy—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Investigate the chemistry behind an exciting “popping” toy. A chemi- cal reaction within a sealed bag rapidly produces carbon dioxide gas, expanding until the bag breaks with a loud pop that will grab even your most inattentive student’s interest! Students test and compare the unknown components of the toy against known chemicals to figure out the reaction that creates the “pop.” This fun investigative laboratory activity is also a great introduction to microscale chemistry. Two addi- tional toys are included for a pre-lab demonstration.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Spot plates are required and available separately.
pH Measurements Using Indicators—
Super Value Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students carry out a series of dramatically colorful tests while they learn that:
• Indicators can be acidic or basic.
• Each indicator has a specific pH range.
• Indicators can be combined to create a specific guide.
Students investigate multiple indicators to identify the pH of three unknowns. Students also predict color changes based on data they collect. Indicators are supplied in convenient dropper-style bottles. Includes all necessary chemicals, reproducible student handouts, detailed background information, and Instructor’s Notes with sample data and answers to questions.
Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs.
