Kinetics and Reaction Rate—Laboratory Kits
Factors Affecting Reaction Rates—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
What factors affect the rate of a chemical reaction? In this laboratory activity, students will perform the classic iodine–starch clock reaction to quantitatively investigate the effects of concentration, temperature and a catalyst on the rate of reaction. Includes reproducible student handouts, detailed background information and complete Instructor’s Notes with sample data, calculations and answers to questions, plus all necessary chemicals and specialized equipment.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Fifteen reusable, six-well reaction plates are required and available separately.
Introduction to Reaction Rates— The “Blue Bottle” Reaction— Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Studying reaction rates helps chemists make a variety of products, everything from antibiotics to fertilizers, safely and economically. The purpose of this microscale activity is to teach students how reaction rates are measured and what reaction conditions will affect the rate. Students investigate the “blue bottle” reaction of methylene blue, vary- ing the temperature and the concentration of reactant. With reagents sealed in small plastic pipets, the reactions are simple to set up and even quicker to run. You will be surprised at how easy kinetics can be—perfect for a hands-on introduction to a difficult topic! Includes reproducible student handouts, detailed background information, complete Instructor’s Notes with sample data and answers to questions, and all necessary chemicals and consumable supplies.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
