 Kinetics and Reaction Rates—
Activity-Stations Kit
By: Patricia Mason, Retired, Delphi Community H.S.,
Delphi, IN, and Kathy Kitzmann, Mercy H.S., Farmington Hills, MI
How fast will a chemical reaction occur? Too slow, and it may not be practical. Too fast, and it may explode! In this activity-stations lab, students investigate various factors that influence the rate of chemical reactions. Five independent mini-lab activities are designed to take about 10 minutes each to complete, and students may rotate through the five stations in any order. Students study the effects of surface area, reactant concentration, temperature, nature of reactants, and catalysts on reaction rates. Includes Instructor’s Notes with complete sample data, compre- hensive background information, reproducible student handouts, and all necessary chemicals and consumable supplies. Do twice the labs in half the time!
Complete for 30 students working in groups of three.

Kinetics of Dye Fading— Student Laboratory Kit By: The Flinn Staff
The acid–base indicators phenolphthalein, crystal violet, and brom- phenol blue turn various bright colors in basic solutions. Surprisingly, these colors will eventually fade if the solution is too basic! In this technology-based experiment, students analyze the kinetics of these “fading” reactions by measuring the absorbance or intensity of the specific indicator’s color as a function of time. Graphing the results reveals how the rate of the fading reaction depends on the concentration of the indicator—1st order or 2nd order. Includes Instructor’s Notes, extensive background material, and reproducible student handouts.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Spectrophotometer or colorimeter is required.

Rate of Reactions—Guided-Inquiry Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students learn how reaction rates are measured and
how temperature affects the rate of a reaction as they design kinetics experiments for the reaction of magnesium with hydrochloric acid. Pre-lab preparation built into the activity ensures students will be well-prepared and successful. Includes reproducible student handouts, pre-lab preparation guide, complete Instructor’s Notes with sample procedure, sample data, and answers to all questions, and all necessary chemicals and consumable supplies.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
