Kinetics and Reaction Rate— Demonstration Kits
A Flash of Blue—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: Jim and Julie Ealy, Retired
The Peddie School, Hightstown, NJ
In a flash, like magic, a colorless solution turns a dramatic dark blue color. You and your students will be amazed by this popular starch– iodine clock reaction. Demonstration Notes included.
Concepts: Clock reactions, kinetics, catalysts.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Starch solution, sulfuric acid solution, potassium iodate solution and sodium metabisulfite.
Catalytic Spectrum Show—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
A rainbow spectrum of color changes provides visual proof of the effect of a catalyst. Hydrogen peroxide is added to two separate flasks, each containing a basic solution of sodium thiosulfate, along with universal indicator. One flask also contains the catalyst ammonium molybdate. The reaction produces sulfate ions, water, and hydrogen ions. As hydrogen ions are produced and the pH changes, the universal indicator changes color from purple to blue to green to yellow to red-orange. By plotting the times at which the color changes occur versus the pH values of the indicator colors, students can compare the relative speeds of the catalyzed and uncatalyzed reactions. Demonstration Notes, along with reproducible student worksheets, are included.
Concepts: Oxidation–reduction, catalysts, acid–base indicators, reac- tion rate.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Ammonium molybdate, hydrogen peroxide solu- tion, sodium hydroxide solution, sodium acetate, sodium thiosulfate, and universal indicator solution.
Iodine Clock Reaction—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Mix two colorless solutions and watch as, after a few seconds, they suddenly change from colorless to dark blue. What an attention-getter! This kit allows you to quantitatively demonstrate the popular iodine- starch clock reaction. In each demonstration, the class records six sets of data comparing the effects of concentration, temperature and a catalyst on the measured rate. Students become actively involved by counting the number of seconds from the initial mixing of the solutions to the appearance of the blue color. Explore concepts of kinetics with this dramatic, engaging demonstration! Demonstration Notes included. Concepts: Kinetics, catalysts, clock reactions.
Time Required: 25 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Potassium iodate solution, sodium meta-bisul- fite, starch solution, and sulfuric acid solution.
