Oxidation–Reduction Basics—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Redox, single replacement, metal reactivity, halogen reactivity! Students investigate reactions between various metals and metallic ion solutions to determine the relative tendency of metals to lose electrons. Students will then combine free halogens with halide ion solutions to determine the relative tendency of halogens to gain electrons. This kit makes a perfect introduction to your redox unit! Includes Instructor’s Notes, reproducible student handouts and all specialized equipment, metals, test reagents and chemicals to prepare chlorine and bromine water.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Perform this experiment in a fume hood or well-ventilated lab.

The Activity Series of the Elements—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: Brother Carmen Ciardullo, Retired
St. Joseph’s Prep Seminary, Princeton, NJ
Price/Each $58.70
The activity of zinc, copper, lead, magnesium and silver are tested. Small amounts of chemicals and metals produce less waste while still producing good results. The students will actually see more reac- tive metals going into solution while less reactive metals plate out of solution. The reactivity of an acid and the metals are also tested. All chemicals and specialized equipment are provided.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Fifteen reusable 24-well reaction plates are recommended and available separately.

Single Replacement Reactions and Metal Activity—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Why do single replacement reactions occur in one direction only, with a more active metal always replacing the ion of a less active metal? In this microscale experiment, students carry out a series of possible single replacement reactions of copper, iron, magnesium, and zinc with solu- tions of metal cations. Analyzing the results allows students to rank the metals from most active to least active, determine the activity series of the metals, and predict the reactivity of metals that were not tested. The experiment also provides valuable practice writing chemical equations. Versatile student lab kit may be used to teach a variety of concepts— single replacement reactions, molecular versus net ionic equations, oxidation–reduction reactions, and activity series! Includes reproduc- ible student handouts, detailed background information, complete Instructor’s Notes with sample data and answers to all questions, and all necessary chemicals and consumable supplies.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Fifteen reusable 24-well reaction plates are required and available separately.
