Make a Printed Circuit Board—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Printed circuit boards are all around us. With this kit, students can use photoengraving and chemical etching to generate their own printed circuit boards, while learning valuable chemical concepts. The 100 mm x 150 mm copper boards are coated with a positive photoresist, which becomes soluble in basic solutions following exposure to light. Exposed copper is then removed through a redox reaction with iron(III) chloride.
Complete for 24 students working in groups of three. Additional presensitized copper circuit boards are available separately. An expo- sure source, developing trays and glass weight are also required to complete this experiment.

Colorful Iron Complexes—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Easily distinguish solutions of iron(II) and iron(III) ions by performing redox reactions between iron’s two oxidation states. Answer the question of why iron(III) is the more stable of the two states. Simply add various complex ions to solutions of iron(II) or iron(III) and observe the forma- tion of the beautifully colored Prussian blue precipitate or of the deep blood-red complex, the confirming test for iron(III)! Students will gain practice in determining oxidation numbers, writing redox reactions, and analyzing electron configurations. Demonstration Notes included. Concepts: Oxidation-reduction, oxidation numbers, complex ions, electron configuration, transition metals.
Time Required: 10 minutes
Materials Provided: Solutions of iron(III) chloride, iron(II) sulfate, potassium ferricyanide, potassium ferrocyanide, and potassium thio- cyanate, test tubes and stoppers.
Foiled Again—Aluminum Loses to
Copper—Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Watch metallic copper appear instantaneously as aluminum foil is added to aqueous cupric chloride. Try adding aluminum foil to aqueous cupric sulfate—no copper forms and aluminum survives! Add a cata- lyst—copper appears and aluminum is foiled again! Students observe color changes, production of a gas, formation of a solid and a drastic change in temperature. Students learn the crucial role of a catalyst with this visually dramatic demonstration—a true redox battle between aluminum and copper. Demonstration Notes included.
Concepts: Oxidation–reduction, catalysis, single replacement reactions. Time Required: 15 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Aluminum foil, copper(II) chloride solution, copper(II) sulfate solution, sodium chloride solution.
