Feeling Blue—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: Jim and Julie Ealy, Retired
The Peddie School, Hightstown, NJ
No one is exempt from an occasional “bout with the blues.” The blues come and go as in this demo. Two colorless solutions and an indica- tor are mixed, producing a blue solution. Upon standing, the solution becomes colorless. The solution alternates between blue and colorless with shaking and standing, respectively. You’ll wipe those blues away with this fascinating demonstration. Demonstration Notes included. Concepts: Oxidation–reduction, indicators, kinetics.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Dextrose solution, potassium hydroxide solution, and methylene blue solution.
Stop-’N-Go Light—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: Jim and Julie Ealy, Retired
The Peddie School, Hightstown, NJ
When you shake this flask of solution, the color of the solution will turn from a soft yellow to a bright red to a light, grassy green and then shift back to yellow again. Your students will love this reaction because they can help shake the flask and actually make the reaction take place. If the reaction stops, remove the stopper from the flask, allowing air to enter, and the reaction will start up again. Demonstration Notes included. Concepts: Oxidation–reduction, indicators, kinetics.
Time Required: 15–20 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Dextrose solution, sodium hydroxide solution, and indigo carmine.
The Reversible Orange
and Blue Reaction—
Chemical Demonstration Kit By: Marie Sherman and Dr. Deborah Weil
Ursuline Academy, St. Louis, MO
Astonishing, fascinating, amazing and incredible are just a few words to describe this easy-to-do demonstration. A warm, clear, blue solution starts to bubble, the temperature rises, the bubbling becomes vigorous and suddenly the solution becomes an opaque orange-gold color. Since the reaction is reversible, you can repeat it several times by replenishing one of the reactants. An eye- catching way to introduce redox reactions to your students— especially great if your school colors are blue and orange (or gold). Demonstration Notes included.
Concepts: Oxidation–reduction, complex ions.
Time Required: 25 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Potassium sodium tartrate solution, copper(II) sulfate solution, and hydrogen peroxide solution.
