Colorful Oxidation
States of Manganese—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
Create a series of colorful solutions of manganese-containing ions and solids showing the various hues produced by the six oxidation states of manganese. Project the image of a 6-well plate filled with solutions of manganese(II) ions and manganese (VII) ions. By adding specific reac- tants to each well, the manganese oxidation state series of +2 through +7 is created, along with the corresponding color series of light pink (+2), rose (+3), dark brown (+4), blue (+5), green (+6), and purple (+7). Students make observations of the color changes and test their skill at balancing redox reactions. Includes valuable Demonstration Notes with helpful teaching tips, reproducible student worksheets, and enough materials to perform the demonstration seven times.
Concepts: Oxidation–reduction, oxidation states, half-reactions, oxidizing and reducing agents.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Materials Provided: Potassium permangante, manganese sulfate solu- tion, sodium hydroxide, sodium sulfite, sulfuric acid, 6-well reaction plate, Beral-type pipets, toothpicks.

Price/Each $37.85
Produce a rainbow of colors by demonstrating how hydrogen peroxide can both oxidize and reduce. Hydrogen peroxide (which is a color- less solution) will cause another colorless solution to turn yellow then red-orange. It also has the ability to make a purple solution go through a series of color changes with the end solution being colorless. Demonstration Notes included.
Concepts: Oxidation–reduction.
Time Required: 15–20 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Potassium iodide solution, sulfuric acid solution, hydrogen peroxide solution, and potassium permanganate solution.

Price/Each $20.90
Because of its beautiful multicolored compounds, vanadium, atomic number 23, was named after the Scandinavian Goddess of Beauty, Vanadis. In this demonstration, a yellow vanadate solution goes through a series of color changes when shaken together with granulated zinc. Each color change is due to a change in the oxidation state of the vana- dium. Vanadium truly lives up to its name in this demo! Demonstration Notes included.
Concepts: Oxidation–reduction, properties of vanadium.
Time Required: 20 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Granulated zinc, ammonium metavanadate solu- tion, and hydrogen peroxide solution.
