Biochemistry—Laboratory Kits
Chemicals of Life—
Super Value Laboratory Kit
By: David Brock
Roland Park Country School, Baltimore, MD
Give students their initial experience in the chemistry of living matter by having them identify the basic macromolecules of life. This activity can be used as an introduction to biochemistry or any cell unit and will also serve as an excellent first experience to the proper protocols for performing chemical tests. Students will learn and perform standard tests for carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids.
Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs. Perform this experiment in a fume hood or well-ventilated lab.
Digestive Enzymes—General, Organic and Biological Chemistry Experiment See page 12.
Food Analysis—Testing Some Common Foods—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins—your students have surely heard these words, and may have an understanding of what they are, but this Flinn-developed lab activity will allow students to relate these terms to the foods they eat every day. Using the materials supplied in this five-part kit, students test food samples for starches, sugars, lipids (fats), proteins, and Vitamin C. Students gain an understanding of the chemical makeup of substances in foods commonly found in the home. Includes all test solutions, samples for conducting control tests, test tubes, droppers, detailed instructions, supplementary background mate- rial, and suggestions for further study. Try this food analysis kit—it is a great addition to your biochemistry curriculum!
Complete for 100 tests and 12 groups of students.
Green Chemistry: Road Deicers—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff and Beyond Benign
Learn a quick way to assess the relative toxicities of chemicals commonly found in road deicers. This lab, developed in partnerhsip with Beyond Benign, has students examine the effects of aqueous solu- tions of sodium chloride, magnesium chloride and calcium chloride on germination and growth of lettuce seeds. The procedure introduces toxicity measurements, while using standard equipment and common techniques such as serial dilution and volumetric measurement. The goal of the lab is to identify which of the road deicers is the most benign with respect to potential environmental impacts. This can be done as a cooperative class project or on an individual student basis. It requires very little preparation time and exposes students to the tenets of green chemistry and ecotoxicity. Includes reproducible student handouts, Teacher Notes and all necessary chemicals and supplies.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
