Slime for Everyone!
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Slime, slime and more slime—it stretches, it flows, it even picks up ink! With our new, economical kit, you’ll have enough materials for each and every student in your class to make a batch of slime. Students will have fun as they perform observations of all the interesting physical properties of this slimy polymer gel. Instruction sheet provides back- ground information, easy-to-follow procedure and observation/analysis activities. Kit contains enough polyvinyl alcohol solution, sodium borate solution, plastic cups and wood sticks to make 30 batches of slime!
Complete for 30 students working individually. Food coloring is optional and available separately.
Magnetic Polymer Slime—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Making slime out of glue and borax is a popular polymer experiment in many science classrooms. With a simple addition of glue, borax and iron filings, students can make slime that is attracted to a magnetic field! Students will have fun observing how their polymer reacts to a magnet. Includes reproducible student hand-outs, Teacher Notes, magnets and all necessary chemicals.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Small-Scale Synthesis of Polymers— Activity-Stations Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
We use polymers every day! In fact, it is difficult to identify items that do not contain polymers. Despite their tremendous variety, all polymers are basically made by either addition or condensation reac- tions. Three independent “mini-lab” activities are included in this lab kit. Each activity takes about 10–15 minutes to complete, and students may rotate through the activity stations in any order. Students will synthesize three common polymers—nylon, polyurethane and poly- ester—and compare and contrast the methods of preparing them and their properties. All procedures have been microscaled and simplified to make them suitable for the teaching laboratory. The activity-stations format is perfect for this introduction to polymers lab, allowing you to do more labs in less time.
Complete for 27 students working in groups of three. Perform this experiment in a fume hood or well-ventilated lab.
