Flinn Lab Activities and Demonstrations
Polymers—Laboratory Kits, continued
Structures and Properties of Polymers—Activity-Stations Kit By: The Flinn Staff
In this activity-stations lab kit, students investigate the properties of polymers and relate the properties to their structures. Simply set up the four mini-lab activities around the laboratory, and allow students to rotate through the stations in any order. Each activity takes about ten minutes to complete. The polymers and their properties are:
• Sodium Alginate—A Natural Polymer
• Molding Glue—An Amorphous Polymer
• Polystyrene and Polyethylene—Birefringence and Polarized Light
• PTFE Tape—The Long and Short of It
Activity-stations labs shrink time, not content!
Complete for 24 students working in groups of three.
Fluorescent Slime—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: Thomas T. Earles, Retired
Culpeper County H.S., Culpeper, VA
Slime is prepared in a solution of fluorescein and bromophenol blue. The resulting slime appears green in reflected light, red in transmitted light, and bright fluorescent green in ultraviolet light.
Concepts: Polymers, fluorescence, light spectra.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Materials Provided: Fluorescein/bromophenol blue solution, guar gum, sodium borate, self-closing bags.
Note: An ultraviolet light is required and available separately.

Polymers, Polymers, Polymers— Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Introduce your students to the fascinating world of polymer chemistry by making “slime,” polyurethane foam and nylon and by demonstrating the super water-absorbent material found in disposable diapers. Demonstration Notes included.
Concepts: Uses and formation of polymers, specifically “slime,” poly- urethane foam, nylon and sodium polyacrylate; crosslinking.
Time Required: 30 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Polyvinyl alcohol and sodium borate solutions, polyurethane foam system Parts A and B, sodium polyacrylate and adipoyl chloride/hexane and hexamethylenediamine/sodium hydroxide solutions. Note: Perform this demonstration in a fume hood or well-ventilated lab.
Polyurethane Foam System— Chemical Demonstration Kit By: The Flinn Staff
Try this amazing demonstration! Simply mix two viscous liquids together and watch as the mixture expands to about 30 times its origi- nal volume. The result is a hardened, lightweight polyurethane foam. Demonstration Notes included.
Concepts: Polymers, catalysis.
Time Required: 10 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Polyurethane foam system, Parts A and B.
