Making Natural Paint—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Incorporate this student laboratory kit into your green chemistry lessons and witness your students’ enthusiasm as they create beautiful works of chemistry art! Students learn about the structure and properties of amino acids as they produce a natural paint from the milk protein casein. Five different color food dyes are included in this kit to add color interest to the environmentally-friendly paint. As students have fun experimenting with their natural paint, they will gain appreciation for the practical application of green chemistry! Includes reproducible student handouts, Instructor Notes, and all necessary chemicals.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Determination of Iron in Dietary Supplements—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Iron is an essential mineral for human health. When dietary supple- ments of iron are recommended, many people turn to over-the-counter pills. What is the form of iron in these pills, and do they actually contain the amount of iron they claim? Have students analyze them and find out! The amount of iron in dietary supplements is determined using acid digestion, serial dilution, and colorimetric analysis. The color intensity is compared using a color chart to determine the amount of iron in the final solution. To confirm the iron concentration, students do a side- by-side comparison with a “spiked” sample to which they have added a known amount of iron. It’s a challenging lab, but the results are very accurate, and students appreciate the real-world applications! Will their results match the information provided on the supplement label?

Water Softening—Guided-Inquiry Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
It’s not that hard! Use this water-softening inquiry lab
to teach the concepts of water hardness, complex ions, ion exchange, and titration. Water samples with unknown hardness will be treated with ion- exchange resin and analyzed by EDTA titration. Students use flowcharts to outline their self-designed experiments for determining the optimum amount of ion-exchange resin to soften their particular water sample. Thoughtful guided-inquiry experiment lets students identify the miner- als removed through ion exchange and understand the practical benefits of water softening. Includes reproducible student handouts, detailed Instructor Notes, and all necessary chemicals and consumable supplies.

Quantitative Determination of
Food Dyes—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Food dyes are everywhere, from food to drink to cosmetics! How much food dye is actually contained in products? In this experiment, determine how much or little of a series of food dyes are added to granular drink mixes to give these drinks their vivid colors. Students use a spectropho- tometer to determine the optimal wavelength of absorbed light for each of three FD&C food dyes: red 40, yellow 5, blue 1. Students then develop standard absorption versus concentration curves for each of the dyes. Absorption data for fixed concentrations of drink mix solutions are gener- ated at these three wavelengths. Students then use the data to determine the concentration of each food dye in the powdered drink mixes. Includes all chemicals and consumable supplies needed to perform the lab.
