It’s in the Cards—Periodic Table
Super Value Guided-Inquiry Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Recreate Mendeleev’s discovery of the periodic table using this open- ended, inquiry-based activity. Students play chemical solitaire using a special deck of 32 element cards. The cards summarize the properties of the elements, but not their names or identities. As students arrange and rearrange the cards based on logical trends in the properties of the elements, they soon discover for themselves the nature of the periodic law. Students also find, just as Mendeleev did, that there are “missing” elements. They must then decide where their missing element belongs and predict its properties. Your students will not just learn about the periodic table, they will own the table—because they have discovered it!
Kit includes six decks of 32 element cards, reproducible student hand- outs and worksheets, detailed background information, and complete Instructor’s Notes with sample data and answers to all questions.
Super Value Kit is complete for 24 students working in groups of four. All materials are reusable.

Periodic Table Analogy—
A Card Puzzle—Super Value Kit
By: Fran Zakutansky
Pascack Valley High School, Hillsdale, NJ
Unlock the puzzle of the periodic table! In this activity, students are challenged to organize or arrange a special deck of colored cards using a method of two-dimensional classification. Students discover the mean- ing of periodicity as their final layout reveals patterns and trends in the rows and columns. But wait, the table is incomplete! Students’ learning is improved as they predict the properties of missing cards, just as Mendeleev predicted the properties of “missing” elements in the periodic table more than 100 years ago. Includes complete instructions with reproducible student handouts, valuable Instructor’s Notes, and 10 sets of 30 cards.
Super Value Kit is complete for 10 student groups. All materials are reusable.
Periodic Table Basics—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Teach your students about the elements and the periodic table with two pre-lab exercises and two hands-on laboratory activities in this kit. Students use the large foldover periodic tables supplied to gather infor- mation on element symbols, names and atomic numbers. Students then do the ultimate element crossword puzzle, a fun learning activity that provides interesting clues about the 62 elements in the puzzle.
• In Lab #1, students compare the reactivity of two alkaline earth metals, making both qualitative and quantitative observations.
• In Lab #2, students investigate trends in the solubility of four alkaline earth metal cations by combining each cation with five different chemi- cals, making observations and writing equations for reactions that occur. Includes twelve different chemicals, 120 reusable pipets, 12 Flinn
11" x 17" foldover four-color periodic tables, detailed Instructor’s Notes and reproducible student handouts, including data tables and post-lab questions.
Complete for 24 students working in pairs. Twelve reusable 24-well reaction plates are required and available separately.
