Periodic Table and Trends— Demonstration Kits, continued
Periodic Activity of Metals—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
The reactions of alkali and alkaline earth metals with water can be spectacular reactions. Introduce the study of the periodic table and periodic trends with this exciting but safe, small-scale demonstration of the activity of metals. Learn how elements are classified based on similarities, differences, and trends in their properties, including their chemical reactions. Kit includes small, pre-cut demonstration pieces of lithium and sodium, along with magnesium ribbon and calcium turn- ings. Simply display the metals in the Petri dishes provided with the kit to observe their physical properties, then react the metals one at a time with water. Compare the activity of each metal against the previous metal to identify the periodic trends in the activity of metals. Concepts: Alkali and alkaline earth metals, periodic table and trends, physical and chemical properties, metal activity.
Time Required: 20 minutes
Materials Provided: Five small pre-cut pieces of lithium and sodium,
calcium turnings, magnesium ribbon, phenolphthalein solution, dispos- able Petri dishes.

Safe Swimming with Sodium—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
No chemistry class is complete without the spectacular demonstra- tion of alkali metals reacting with water. Safe Swimming with Sodium is a novel variation which is much safer to perform than the standard sodium demonstration of simply dropping a small piece of alkali metal into a beaker of water. In this demonstration, two immiscible liquids, water and mineral oil, are poured into a graduated cylinder. When a small piece of sodium is added to the cylinder it falls through the top layer of mineral oil and reacts with the water at the interface and is forced back into the mineral oil layer. The density of sodium brings it back down into contact with the water and the process begins again. Sodium pieces are pre-cut for use. Demonstration Notes included. Concepts: Alkali metals, density, immiscible liquids.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Sodium, phenolphthalein, mineral oil.

Electron Configuration Concert—
Overhead Demonstration Model
By: Patrick Kelley, Richland H.S., North Richland Hills, TX
Demonstrate to your students how to properly determine the electron configuration of each element on the periodic table! Simulate the periodic table by hosting an electron configuration concert and learn how easy it is to teach this concept to your students! A unique model displays a concert floor plan overhead transparency containing four seating sections—s, p, d, and f. The spdf seating chart lays out the rules for the correct way to “seat the people in the outdoor amphitheatre.”
Students find it easy to remember the electron filling order of the energy levels in atoms by relating it to this concert scenario.
Concepts: Electron configuration of the elements, atomic structure, energy levels.
Time Required: 20–30 minutes
Materials Provided: Concert floor plan transparency and master, spdf seating chart transparency and master, instructions with sample scenario, student worksheet, and periodic table master.
