Molecules, Compounds and Formulas— Models, continued
 Magnetic Water Molecules Kits
Studying water concepts requires a great thirst for knowledge! Students can feel the various strengths of hydrogen, covalent and ionic bonds, explore the water cycle and even make ice. Molecular models help students investigate differences between molecular adhesion, cohe- sion and capillary actions and enable students to demonstrate surface tension, evaporation, condensation and solubility. Each set includes 12 water molecules, one sodium, one chloride, one ethane and one hydroxyl group. The embedded magnets in the atoms reflect the correct positive or negative charges to give students hands-on experience in molecular attraction or repulsion. Two sizes available.
Molecular Models
Durable, attractive, and functional molecular modeling kits are great for demonstrations and activities. Models can be easily constructed by and used for discussions, or put on display and reused over and over as teaching tools. Kits include background information, detailed assembly instructions with diagrams, teaching activities and tips, and spare parts. Specifics of each model kit are provided below.
Graphite Model Kit
Contains 76 trigonal carbons and 92 vinyl tubes.
Illustrates flat layered structure of graphite’s six-carbon rings and the slippery feel of the molecule.
Diamond Model Kit
Contains 57 tetrahedral carbons and 82 vinyl tubes.
Illustrates stability and hardness of diamond, network covalent bonding, and cleavage.
Buckyball (C60) Model Kit
Contains 62 trigonal carbons and 92 vinyl tubes.
Illustrates stability of the ball structure, ability to “bounce”, ability to trap atoms within the cage, and the beautiful symmetry of the C60 Buckminsterfullerene molecule.
Ice Model Kit
Contains 50 red, 4-peg oxygens; 100 white, 2-peg hydrogens; and 174 vinyl tubes.
Enables students to build a two-layered hexagonal ice crystal. Illustrates hydrogen bonding and the increase in volume of ice as compared to liquid water.
Sodium Chloride Model Kit
Contains 40 silver, 6-peg sodium ions; 40 green, 6-peg chloride ions; and 158 vinyl tubes.
Exhibits 6:6 coordination and displays sodium chloride’s (table salt) cubic crystal lattice.
NaCl Lattice Model, Magnetic
Take your salt crystal lessons from 2-D to 3-D with this sodium chlo- ride ion model set! Students will be able to discover the cubic nature of salt crystals, efficient lattice packing, high melting temperature and cleavage planes all with this 3 × 3 × 3 model. Each ion model contains six embedded magnets that allow 6:6 coordination and tight packing. Explore how the positive sodium and negative chloride ions form elec- trostatic bonds to create a strong crystal structure. Contains 27 ions, 13 of one type of ion and 14 of the other.
