Hydrolysis of Salts—
Super Value Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Acids are acidic, bases are basic, and salts are neutral—right? Not exactly! Teach your students that certain salts dissolve in water to produce acid solutions and others produce basic solutions with this colorful lab. Using universal indicator in test tubes, your students will discover colorful solutions from the simple hydrolysis of salts. Students write and discuss the hydrolysis reactions for five different salts with water. Teacher notes and reproducible student handouts include easy-to- follow lab instructions, sample data, answers to questions, and in-depth background information.
Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs.

Recycling Aluminum—Synthesis
of Alum—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Produce something new—synthesize! Aluminum potassium sulfate (alum) is used for many different purposes—from pickling foods to aftershave for men. Students perform a multi-step chemical reaction starting with a common household ingredient—aluminum foil. Add potassium hydroxide, sulfuric acid, water and the techniques of dissolu- tion, crystallization, and filtering to produce solid alum. Students also calculate percent yield and perform a post-lab cost analysis.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Apparatus for grav- ity filtration and a full aspirator filtration assembly is required and available separately. Perform this experiment in a fume hood or well- ventilated lab.
Recycling Copper—A Four Reaction
Copper Cycle—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
How old is the copper penny in your pocket? It may be older than you think! Recovery and recycling of copper metal is a thriving industry. The purpose of this experiment is to carry out a sequence of chemi- cal reactions that starts with copper and ends with copper. The “four reaction copper cycle” illustrates the properties of copper and its compounds and demonstrates different types of chemical reactions. “Copper-cycle” experiments are classic labs—the reactions in this lab have been optimized to make them as safe and efficient as possible. Students will love the beautiful reactions and the challenge of reclaim- ing the copper. Lab can be completed in one 50-minute class period! Includes reproducible student handouts, detailed background informa- tion, complete Instructor’s Notes with sample data and answers to all questions, and all necessary chemicals and consumable supplies.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
