Chemical Reactions—Laboratory Kits, continued
Qualitative Analysis of 11 Unknowns— Super Value Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Eleven white solids—they all look alike! How can they be identified? Students are challenged as they follow a qualitative analysis flow chart to determine the identity of the eleven unknowns—all common household substances. Following the flow chart, students use a variety of physical and chemical procedures to test the unknowns and record descriptive observations on the data sheet. Students ultimately make a “guess” as to the identity of the unknowns. Instructor’s Notes and reproducible student handouts include easy-to-follow lab instructions, a detailed flow chart, and data tables. Eleven unknown samples, test reagents, 11 polypropyl- ene jars, test tubes, pipets, and wood stirrers are provided.
Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs.
Qualitative Ion Test—Super Value Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
How do we analyze an unknown chemical? Making
comparisons to “known” chemicals is one common method. In this labo- ratory activity, students will perform qualitative ion tests on four known anion and six known cation solutions. Students will then be challenged to use their observations to analyze and identify the cation and anion that make up an unknown salt, through comparison to the known tests. Reproducible student handouts include easy-to-follow lab instructions, data tables and questions. Helpful Instructor’s Notes provide prepara- tion information, tips, sample data and answers to questions. Ion testing solutions, test reagents, pipets, labels and wood stirrers are provided.
Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs. Fifteen reusable 24-well reaction plates are recommended and available separately. Perform this experiment in a fume hood or well- ventilated lab.
Chemical Reactions—Demonstration Kits
Chemistry of Food Additives— Multi-Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Is artificial ever beneficial? Consumers often associate food additives as being unhealthy and strictly used for convenience foods. This four- part demonstration allows students to see the science behind some of the marketing.
• Extract iron from common breakfast cereal. Determine the form of iron present and compare the quantity present to the quantity specified on the Nutrition Facts label. It’s elemental!
• Iodide is added to iodized salt to prevent thyroid and other diseases. Demonstrate the presence of this essential nutrient by oxidizing the iodide and doing a starch–iodine test.
• Do some simple measurements to illustrate how it’s possible to claim that salt substitutes have less sodium than regular table salt.
• Reveal the nature of the “secret ingredient” added to freshly cut fruit to prevent it from turning brown.
This great series of demonstrations will build connections between
science and real life. Demonstration Notes included.
Concepts: Consumer chemistry, food additives.
Time Required: One full class period with follow-up the next day. Chemicals Provided: Acetone, ascorbic acid, hydrochloric acid, iodized table salt, iron(II) sulfate solution, 1,10-phenanthroline solu- tion, potassium iodide, salt sense, sodium chloride, sodium hypochlorite solution, starch solution.
