Chemical Bonding—Laboratory Kits
Crystal Structure—
Super Value Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
How are atoms arranged in a metallic solid and in an ionic compound? Are the arrangements of atoms random or is there a “system” to it with regular “repeating units? In this two-part lab, students will build models of the three cubic crystal lattice structures and the closest-packed arrangements using polystyrene foam spheres and wire connectors. Students then analyze the models to determine the total number of atoms or ions in each unit cell. Includes 84 2-inch spheres, 72 1-inch spheres, and wire connectors, along with Instructor’s Notes, extensive background material, and reproducible student handouts.
Super Value Kit is complete for six student groups. All materials are reusable.
Lewis Electron Dot Models—
Super Value Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Help students visualize molecular bonding while providing a hands-on model-building experience. This innovative kit utilizes “electron” chips and cut-out element symbols to build Lewis electron dot models for both atoms and molecules. Students are able to count and manipulate the electron “chips” for a variety of molecular structures and then draw the structures in the provided data tables. Detailed instructions guide students through the determination of valence electrons and the draw- ing of Lewis electron dot structures. Includes a magnetic wand and 100 wire-rimmed counting chips for overhead demonstrations, 1,000 colored chips for student use, background information, instructions, data tables and reproducible masters for elements 1–18, plus extras of the common elements, such as H, C, O and N. Simplify the “not-so-simple” concept of molecular bonding—build Lewis electron dot structures!
Super Value Kit is complete for 30 students working individually. All materials are reusable.
VSEPR Origami—Student Activity Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
A cut here, a fold there, a couple of tucks, and Presto!
You have created a three-dimensional model of sulfur hexafluoride. This unique kit combines the fun of paper-folding using origami tech- niques with the rigors of molecular structure—a great way to engage your diverse student body. Students cut out “flattened” shapes of the six basic molecular geometries predicted by VSEPR, then use origami folding techniques to produce each three-dimensional structure. All students, especially visual learners, will benefit from the opportunity to build these interesting models! Ten color sets of six VSEPR geometry cutouts, along with a periodic table master sheet, are provided in the kit.
Complete for 30 students working in groups of three.
