Energy and Thermodynamics—Laboratory Kits
Cool Light—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students will be amazed when they perform this chemiluminescence experiment. They will prepare two solutions and pour them simultaneously into a flask—producing a beautiful blue glow. An instruction sheet with a short history of chemiluminescence is provided.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.

Blueprint T-Shirts—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Sure to be a student favorite! Use ultraviolet radiation from the sun to produce personalized, one-of-a-kind T-shirts! Photosensitive T-shirts are prepared by soaking white T-shirts in a solution containing two iron salts, ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. The next day, when the shirts are dry, the students place opaque objects on the shirts and then expose them to direct sunlight for about 20 minutes. UV light striking the fabric causes a light-activated redox reaction to occur. Areas exposed to light turn dark blue due to the formation of Prussian blue while areas that are shielded from the UV light do not react and remain white. Rinsing the T-shirt with water removes any unreacted salts, and reveals the blueprint—a sharp white imprint of the object on a dark blue background. Includes reproducible student handouts, detailed background information, and complete Instructor’s Notes with answers to all questions.
Complete for 30 students working individually. White, cotton T-shirts are required but not included.
Flame Test—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Add a splash of color to your flame! In this kit, students
will observe the characteristic color of light emitted by metallic salts when placed in a flame. By simply dipping a moist wooden splint in the solid metallic salt, then placing the wooden splint in the flame, students will be able to identify the color of light emitted for calcium, copper, lithium, potassium, sodium, and strontium. The basic lab activity is ideal for physical science and introductory chemistry classes. Incorporate the optional data analysis section and extensions to challenge your higher level students. Includes reproducible student handouts, complete Instructor’s Notes with sample data, answers to questions and ideas for extensions, plus all the materials needed to perform the lab.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
