Heats of Reaction and Hess’s Law—
Small-Scale Calorimetry Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
An intense flame, blinding light, and searing heat—magnesium burn- ing in air is a dazzling reaction. But how much heat is produced when magnesium burns? In this advanced-level microscale experiment, students use an indirect method and Hess’s Law to determine the heat of reaction for the combustion of magnesium. Students measure the heats of reaction for magnesium and magnesium oxide reacting with hydrochloric acid in special small-scale calorimeters. Using Hess’s Law and a little algebra, students then combine these measurements with the heat of formation of water to determine the heat of reaction for the overall reaction, magnesium burning in air! This is a perfect experi- ment for students who have completed an introductory calorimetry experiment and want a little challenge. Special small-scale calorimeters included with the kit give remarkably accurate results. Includes repro- ducible student handouts, detailed background information, complete Instructor’s Notes with sample data and answers to questions, and the chemicals and small-scale calorimeters needed to perform the lab.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Digital thermometers are recommended and available separately.

Thermodynamics in a Bag—
Super Value Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Introduce thermodynamics using the hands-on activities provided in this kit. Students will experience exothermic and endothermic reac- tions as they perform three different chemical reactions in heavy-duty, zipper-lock plastic bags. The setup and reactions are quick, and the bags are reusable, which saves precious time and money. Students monitor temperature changes by touch or quantitatively with a thermometer (sold separately). Includes chemicals, bags, pipets, well-written Instructor’s Notes and reproducible student worksheets.
Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 24 students working in pairs.

  Light Box, Flinn
By: The Flinn Staff
Illuminate your demonstrations using the Flinn
Light Box. Your students will be better able to view your demonstra- tions. The Flinn Light Box is constructed of 3⁄4" plywood. Its rugged construction allows for both vertical and horizontal viewing. The cool 20-watt fluorescent light bulb and sturdy acrylic viewing screen yield maximum diffusion with minimum glare. The 27" W x 6" H x 8" D dimensions will accommodate most large glassware. A convenient cord power switch (115 Volt AC) and installed fluorescent bulb make the Flinn Light Box complete and ready to use. No demonstrator should be without one!
