                 Energy and Thermodynamics— Demonstration Kits
 Chemiluminescent Ammonia Fountain—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
An exciting demonstration showing the solubility of a gas in water and the conversion of chemical energy to light. Using the old-time ammo- nia fountain demonstration we’ve added a “special twist” by having a chemiluminescent reaction also take place at the same time. This demonstration is not only exciting to watch, but will also help your students understand some difficult chemistry concepts.
Concepts: Chemiluminescence, solubility.
Time Required: 25 minutes
Materials Provided: Hydrogen peroxide, sodium carbonate, luminol, sodium bicarbonate, ammonium carbonate, copper(II) sulfate, and a T-shaped tubing connector.
Note: A one-liter, round-bottom flask and a few mL of concentrated ammonium hydroxide are required and available separately. Perform this demonstration in a fume hood or well-ventilated lab.
Chemiluminescent Elephant’s Toothpaste—Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: John J. Fortman, Retired
Wright State University, Dayton, OH
A new twist on an old favorite! The catalyzed decomposition of hydro- gen peroxide is a prolific oxygen generator. It’s even more wonderful when yeast is the catalyst and light stick chemicals are added, creating volumes and volumes of glowing foam. Use this demonstration to teach the concepts of chemiluminescence, decomposition reactions, and catalysts. Whether you call it Elephant’s Toothpaste or Old Foamey, it’s back with glowing reviews!
Concepts: Chemiluminescence, decomposition reactions, catalysts. Time Required: 15 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Hydrogen peroxide, 30%, yeast, dishwashing liquid, light sticks.
Note: A large demonstration tray is recommended. See AP5429 for a description of our fiberglass demonstration tray.
Cool Light—
Chemical Demonstration Kit

Wow your students as you demonstrate a basic chemiluminescence experiment. You will prepare two solutions and pour them simultane- ously into a flask. Voila! A beautiful blue glow! An instruction sheet with a short history of chemiluminescence is provided. Enough chemi- cals for seven demonstrations are provided.
Concepts: Chemiluminescence, oxidation-reduction.
Time Required: 15–20 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Luminol, potassium ferricyanide, sodium hydroxide solution, and hydrogen peroxide solution.
