Crude oil is a valued resource for transpor- tation fuels, fuel oils for generating heat and electricity, plastic production and countless synthetic materials. As useful as this fossil fuel is in so many facets of our everyday lives, extracting it from the environment includes some risk, and disastrous oil spills have occurred. In this activity, students learn how oil spills are contained and remediated. Then students practice employing contain- ment options on a small scale. Using their observations from the introductory activ-
ity, students design a method to contain a larger volume of oil and to minimize contamination of the ecosystem.
The EPA reports over 14,000 oil spills a year. One method used to clean up an oil spill is to use oil-eating bacteria. As the bacteria reproduce, they eat more oil until the slick vanishes. Once the slick is gone, their food source is depleted and the bacteria die. Students start by creating mini oil slicks and oily beaches. After applying the bacteria, they witness the action of the bacteria on the oily surfaces over a period of time and real- ize how difficult it is to clean up an oil spill. Includes instructions, a student worksheet and teacher notes.
In this hands-on lab activity, students discover how natural and industrial processes affect human health by testing simulated water samples for the presence of lead. The results illustrate a toxic variation of a nutrient cycle. The cycling of environmental pollutants in the biosphere is a new and important concept. Complete for 30 students working individually. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working individually. A 0.1-g precision balance and other common laboratory supplies are required but not provided.
