Effects of Chemical and Thermal Pollution—Student Laboratory Kit
Students will see the effects of chemical and thermal pollution first hand when they perform this intriguing experiment. Students introduce yeast to different environmental conditions and use Bromthymol blue to determine viability under these various conditions. An excellent activity to show how chemical and thermal pollution can affect water quality and alter the life cycles of organisms! Complete with Teacher Notes, reproducible student handouts and enough materials for 5 groups of students.
Examine the effects of common pollutants on an organism that is abundant in all aquatic envi- ronments—algae! Simulated fertilizer run-off containing nitrates and phosphates is added
to locally collected algae-rich pond water or to purchased algae cultures. Growth is compared against control samples without adding nutri- ents. Students also examine the algal cells using a microscope and record cell counts. Students will understand how fertilizer run-off leads
to algae blooms and why nitrate and phos- phate pollution is an important environmental concern. Materials provided for a class of 30 students working in pairs.

Water Treatment Activity Model
Students build their own model of a sewage treatment plant—complete with filtration, aeration and bioremediation capabilities. Durable plastic model is accompanied by all materials needed to test and treat water, including filter paper, simulated pollutants, bioremediation agents, air pump and test materials. Comprehensive teacher’s guide and student copy masters are included. Model size: 131⁄4" L x 41⁄2" W x 171⁄4" H. AP5312 | $249.80
