ACID RAIN, continued
Nitrogen Oxides and Acid Rain—Demonstration Kit
When nitrogen and oxygen—the two primary components of the air we breathe—combine under certain conditions, the results can be devastating. In this demonstration, nitrogen oxides are generated and the resulting gases bubbled into water containing an indicator. As the water shifts from near neutral to highly acidic, the color change is dramatic. And just when the reac- tion appears to be complete... a breathtaking surprise! Accentuate your discussion of acid rain with this remarkable demonstration.

Perform a simulation of acid rain formation in a plastic bag. Chemicals react to form
a visible brown cloud of nitrogen dioxide which, in turn, acidifies water in the bag.
An acid–base indicator shows that the pH is altered. The results are unmistakable—and it all takes place within a bag on an overhead projector! Enough materials are provided for seven demonstrations. Includes zipper-lock bag, 12-well reaction plate, copper wire, nitric acid solution and universal indicator solution. Note: Perform this demonstration in a fume hood or well-ventilated lab.

Acid Rain Test Strips
Kit contains 15 strips of pH test paper and a color comparison chart—designed for measuring the pH of rain in the range of 3.0 to 6.0. A student taking an acid rain survey can take readings on 15 samples.

Acid Rain Survey Kit
This kit contains everything you need to collect and monitor the pH of rainwater or potentially acidic freshwater sources. Each kit includes enough materials for an entire class—15 sample tubes with caps, 5 color comparison charts and enough test paper (pH 3.0–6.0) for over 75 determinations. Also included is a vial of Hydrion 0–12 pH test paper. All components are completely portable for use in the field.
