Pollution—Student Laboratory Kit
Crude oil is a valued resource for transpor- tation fuels, fuel oils for generating heat and electricity, plastic production and countless synthetic materials. As useful as this fossil fuel is in so many facets of our everyday lives, extracting it from the environment includes some risk, and disastrous oil spills have occurred. In this activity, students learn how oil spills are contained and remediated. Then students practice employing containment options on a small scale. Using their observa- tions from the introductory activity, students then design a method to contain a larger volume of oil and to minimize contamination of the ecosystem.

Forensic Groundwater Contaminator—Student Laboratory Kit
A rancher drills a well on the outskirts of a rural community and submits a sample for analysis. A potentially serious pollutant is found. Students determine the extent of the pollutant’s spread and pinpoint its source
so the community can assess and remedy
the problem. Students select test well sites, “analyze” samples from the selected wells, map the extent and concentration levels of the pollutant and submit proposals for addressing the problem. Complete for 30 students work- ing in groups of three. Consumables are easily replaced for indefinite use.

Challenge your students to understand the potential harm that lead presents to their lives and the environment. Lead is a natu- rally occurring element that accumulates
in soil and water as well as in the tissues of the plants and animals that grow in contam- inated areas. In this lab activity, students
test simulated environmental water samples for the presence of lead. Complete for 30 students working individually. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working individually. A 0.1-g precision balance and common laboratory supplies are required but not provided.

The quality of our water sources is of great concern to us all. Students will see the effects of chemical and thermal pollution when they perform this intriguing experiment. Students introduce yeast to different environmental conditions to see how the yeast cultures are affected. Bromthymol blue is used to deter- mine just how viable yeast cultures are under the conditions. An excellent activity to show how chemical and thermal pollution can affect water quality and alter the life cycles of organisms! Complete with and enough mate- rials for 5 groups of students.
