Watch metallic copper appear instantaneously as aluminum foil is added to aqueous cupric chloride. Try adding aluminum foil to aqueous cupric sulfate—no copper forms and aluminum survives! Add a catalyst—copper appears and aluminum is foiled again! Students observe color changes, production of a gas, formation of a solid and a drastic change in temperature. Students learn the crucial role of a catalyst with this visually dramatic demonstration—a true redox battle between aluminum and copper. Teacher Demonstration Notes included.
