Classic AP Requirement #18—Separation by Chromatography

Separate different colored dyes found in grape Kool-Aid® using chromatography methods that mimic popular methods used in research and industry. Miniature liquid chromatography columns called Sep-Pak® C18 cartridges are used to separate the dyes and polar components of Kool-Aid.

Students will understand the chromatographic process and relate the polarity of molecules to the separation process.

Complete for 24 students working in groups of four.
