Plastic is present in nearly every aspect of our lives that we probably take its importance for granted. Plastic is a basic component of cars, houses, cell phones, clothing and computers, to name just a small handful of its applications. In this experiment, students design and synthesize their own plastics from a simple, one-pot, three-component process. The lab introduces polymers, aqueous reaction chemistry, experimental design and materials chemistry. The plastic can be shaped or colored to suit individual student preference and students can experiment with the reaction parameters to adjust color, hardness and flexibility. Includes reproducible student handouts, Teacher Notes, and all necessary chemicals. Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
