Do your students struggle to visualize what happens during complex processes like chemical reactions, chemical bonding, fission, and ocean acidification? Many students do, because the particle-level interactions that underpin these processes are not visible. Virtual reality (VR) simulations are a quick, easy way to help students connect what happens at the small scale to what they can observe at the macro scale. For example, the intermolecular forces that hold water molecules together in the liquid state can be inferred by looking at a beaker of water, and can be viewed in virtual reality to promote a deeper understanding. These short experiences are particularly impactful when paired with hands-on labs. Each VR simulation runs about five minutes. The simulations are accessible as an app-store download on most smartphones when used with an entry-level headset such as Google cardboard.
