Product Details

Teach meiosis terminology using this simple hands-on simulation kit. Students string alleles (pony beads) onto chromosomes (chenille wires) and create a unique gene sequence. The students cross over sections of the chromosome and complete the phases of meiosis.

The student handout includes detailed information about meiosis with simple step-by-step instructions to facilitate true understanding of this complex biological process.

Materials: Chenille wires, Pony beads, Markers, 70% Isopropyl alcohol, Resealable bags

Performance Expectations

MS-LS3-2: Develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation.
HS-LS1-4: Use a model to illustrate the role of cellular division (mitosis) and differentiation in producing and maintaining complex organisms.
HS-LS3-1: Ask questions to clarify relationships about the role of DNA and chromosomes in coding the instructions for characteristic traits passed from parents to offspring.
