Maintenance Alert

Algal cultures are shipped in clear, two- to eight-ounce polystyrene jars. Immediately upon receipt, loosen caps and aerate cultures with clean pipet (included). Leave caps loosely in place to prevent contamination, yet permit air exchange. Cultures should receive diffuse light and be held in atemperature range of 18 to 22 °C. Maintain long-term cultures in clean culture dishes, flasks, or battery jars using an appropriate medium. For lighting use two 48-inch, 40-watt fluorescent bulbs (plant grow-light or wide-spectrum) at a height of 12 to 18 inches. Begin with a light cycle of 16 hours on 8 hours off and reduce to 12 hours on, 12 hours after 7 to 10 days. Subculture to fresh media every 6 to 8 weeks.

Product Details

Most often mistaken for plants, lichens actually represent complex symbiotic associations between algal and fungal species. Notable as pioneer species in the process of ecological succession and as residents of environments that few other organisms can tolerate. Although they seem to thrive under inhospitable conditions, lichens are highly susceptible to pollution and are often seen as natural indicators of air quality. Set includes examples of the three most common morphological types of lichens: foliose, crustose and fruticose. Species vary.
