The course description for the College Board AP Chemistry lists the following topics for electrochemistry: electrolytic and galvanic cells, Faraday’s law, standard half-cell potentials, Nernst equation, and prediction of the direction of redox reactions. Use the following three demonstration to host a lively and informative review of this core topic.
• The Voltaic Cell—Use standard electrode potentials and the Nernst equation to predict the direction of current flow and the voltage when electrolyte concentrations are varied.
• Electrolysis—Measure the change in pH for the electrolysis of potassium iodide solution and use Faraday’s law to determine the average current flow.
• Concentration Cell—Voltage produced with different concentrations of ions forges a deeper understanding of the Nernst equation.
