Big Idea 1 

You and your students will love this advanced-inquiry activity! Students write their very own procedure for wet lab day to spectrophotometrically determine the amount of FD&C Red 40 dye in a beverage. The lab allows for easy prep and can be accomplished in one wet lab period (50 minutes). Prior to lab day, students complete a homework assignment in which a set of leading questions and calculations guide them through serial dilutions and graphical analysis to quantify the amount of FD&C Blue 1 dye in a beverage. The activity captures the important concepts needed for success on lab day and simultaneously strengthens conceptual understanding.

Complete for 24 students working in pairs.
