Ozone and oxygen are allotropes of oxygen and related molecules, but they have very different properties. Investigate the formation and properties of ozone with this novel, small-scale gas-generating kit. Ozone is produced as a byproduct of the electrolysis of sulfuric acid solution. A special modified transfer pipet serves as both the reaction vessel and delivery tube for the ozone. The reactions of ozone with unsaturated organic compounds are illustrated in a series of special effects. Watch as ozone causes a balloon to burst, a rubber band to snap, and decolorizes food dyes and pigments. A very topical demonstration that highlights ozone’s unique role in environmental chemistry! Enough materials are provided to perform the demonstration seven times. Concepts: Electrolysis, oxidation–reduction, properties of ozone. Time Required: 30 minutes Materials Provided: Sulfuric acid solution, dyes, platinum wire, rubber bands, syringe, pipets, alligator clip leads, balloons. Note: Perform this demonstration in a fume hood or well-ventilated lab.
