All nitrates are soluble! Most hydroxides are insoluble! Rather than memorizing solubility rules like this, students investigate precipitation reactions and then develop their own general rules of solubility—exactly what the National Science Standards are calling for! Students perform 42 chemical reactions by combining sets of salt solutions. From their observations, students generate lists of soluble and insoluble substances. By analyzing patterns and making some generalizations, students develop solubility rules.
