Product Details

Equilibrium is a true chemical balancing act. What happens when the delicate balance is disturbed? In this classic chemistry experiment, students examine how concentration and temperature affect the sensitive “pink-and-blue” balance in the complex-ion equilibrium of cobalt chloride in water. Students predict changes based on Le Chatelier’s Principle and see the colorful effects in action. Do your students think that reactant and product concentrations must be equal at equilibrium? Do students insist that the equilibrium constant means that concentrations of individual reactants and products are fixed and cannot change? Don’t rely on pictures in the textbook to chase away these common student misconceptions—let your students see for themselves the true nature of chemical equilibrium! Includes reproducible student handouts, detailed background information, complete Teacher Notes with sample data and answers to questions and all necessary chemicals and consumable supplies.

Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Perform this experiment in a fume hood or well-ventilated lab.
