Why is it that some solids take so much longer to dissolve than others? What factors affect the rate at which a solute dissolves in solution? In this laboratory activity, students will investigate the effects of stirring, temperature, surface area and the amount of solute already dissolved in solution on the rate of dissolving. This activity works well as an open-ended, inquiry-based lab, but may also be performed as a standard laboratory activity—instructions are included for both formats.
