Product Details
Demonstrate the importance of organic chemistry in the apparel industry by synthesizing indigo, the same dye used in blue jeans. Indigo is prepared by a base-catalyzed reaction between acetone and o-nitrobenzaldehyde using vial organic procedures. After synthesizing indigo, students use their product to dye fabric swatches using vat dye techniques. This is a great organic chemistry lab, and one your students will never forget. Includes reaction vials, test tubes, six types of fabric, o-nitrobenzaldehyde, acetone, sodium hydroxide, sodium dithionite, and instructions with detailed procedures, background information, safety and disposal procedures, and Teacher Notes. Complete for 24 students working in pairs. Immersion heaters (or hot plates) are required and available separately (four to six will suffice).
