Product Details

Why does the Moon appear to have different shapes that repeat on a monthly cycle? What do the terms waxing and waning mean? In this activity, students will be given lunar and solar longitude data and map the orbit of the Moon for a full month’s time! This ingenious activity uses a durable lunar orbit map to chart the movement and visibility of the moon. Learning the phases of the Moon has never been so easy!

Complete for 30 students working in pairs.

Performance Expectations

MS-ESS2-2: Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth’s surface at varying time and spatial scales.
MS-ESS3-1: Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for how the uneven distributions of Earth’s mineral, energy, and groundwater resources are the result of past and current geoscience processes.
HS-ESS2-5: Plan and conduct an investigation of the properties of water and its effects on Earth materials and surface processes.
