Water pollution is a crime that is often difficult to solve. While identifying the specific pollutant may be straightforward, locating its source may take serious investigation. A river has been polluted with copper ions and students must identify which industrial site is responsible and quantify the amount of pollution. By knowing the processes and specific chemicals at each site, students can qualitatively test the river water to pinpoint the source of the contamination. Once this source is identified, students determine the level of contamination. Based on their results, students decide if criminal proceedings are warranted.
