Product Details

Is a stereo speaker just another “black box” to your students? Let students discover for themselves how a speaker works using only two plastic cups, a coil of wire, magnets and speaker wire to construct a real working speaker. Students will be amazed when they plug their handmade speaker into a radio and actually hear a tuned-in station! Experimenting with different variables allows students to improve the quality and sound of the speaker. Throughout the process, students learn fundamental concepts, such as energy conversion, electromagnetism, resonance, amplitude and frequency. An excellent real-world experiment that your students are sure to remember! One battery-operated AM/FM radio, detailed instructions and Teacher Notes are provided.

Complete for eight student groups. Two AAA batteries are required and available separately.

Performance Expectations

MS-ETS1-4. Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
MS-ETS1-2. Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
HS-PS3-3. Design, build, and refine a device that works within given constraints to convert one form of energy into another form of energy.
