Product Details
Add depth to your students’ understanding of magnetism—show it in 3-D! Beautiful demonstration clearly reveals the shape and strength of the magnetic field. Simply fill the special jar-and-tube assembly with oil, add iron filings, shake, and insert a magnet. The filings line up along the magnetic field, concentrating especially at the poles where the field strength is greater. Seeing is believing, and this large-scale magnetic field is very visible—and persuasive!
Concepts: Ferromagnetic materials, magnetic field, magnetic domains, magnetic poles.
Time Required: 15 minutes.
Materials Provided: Iron filings, mineral oil, powerful cow magnet, jar with drilled lid and tube.
Note: Neodymium magnets (available separately) may be used to demonstrate other magnetic field variations. Materials may be reused for many years!
