Product Details

From a natural polymer that comes from seaweed to a synthetic polymer that's in the Guinness Book of World Records, polymers have unique and interesting properties. In this activity-stations lab kit, students investigate the properties of polymers and relate the properties to their structures. Simply set up the four mini-lab activities around the classroom, and allow students to rotate through the stations in any order. Each activity takes about ten minutes to complete. Students discover the working principles of polymer structure, including the enormous size of polymer molecules and the flexibility of polymer chains. The polymers and their properties are: • Sodium Alginate—A Natural Polymer • Molding Glue—An Amorphous Polymer • Polystyrene and Polyethylene—Birefringence and Polarized Light • Teflon Tape—The Long and Short of It Activity-stations labs shrink time, not content! Complete for 24 students working in groups of three.
