The Zeeman Effect Apparatus examines the effect of a strong magnetic field on the green emission line of mercury at 545.1 nm wavelength. This set is complete for studying light emissions in a magnetic field and includes video capture equipment and a computer analysis program. The electromagnet is mounted on a swivel on top of a power supply that also powers the slim low pressure mercury discharge lamp. The optical system contains four elements and an optical bench. The polarizer and lens are stored in common housing, and the polarizer can be rotated by 360° and clamped in any orientation. This polarizer serves as an analyzer for detecting the polarization state of the emitted light. Resolution is achieved by the Fabry-Pérot étalon, mounted on a heavy steel block that is attached to a base plate with leveling screws. A CCD video camera with a mounting rod, power supply and PCI video capture card are supplied for direct line observation of the interference fringes. This allows for easier measurement of the fringe shifts on the computer monitor. Specifications include a low pressure mercury discharge lamp, electromagnet with power supply in base that swivels 90° for transverse or longitudinal viewing, current of 0, 0.3–2 A and a maximum field strength of 1 T. Fabry-Pérot étalon includes quartz mirror plates with 2.0-mm spacing, central wavelength of 589.3 nm and a high reflection bandwidth of 100 nm. Computer and software require a Windows-based computer with one available PCI slot running Windows 7 or 8 with at least 64 MB of RAM and up to 1 GB of hard disk space (for storing images).
