4. Fill a test tube with water. Add a small amount of milk to
make the water slightly cloudy. Direct the laser beam through
the test tube at various angles. Note the internal reflection pattern.
5. Glue a flat mirror onto a piece of rubber dam material. Stretch the
rubber dam over the end of a large metal can that is opened at both ends.
Direct the laser beam onto the mirror so its reflection can be seen on a wall
at least several feet away. Watch your voice patterns on the wall as you talk or
sing into the open end of the can.
Think Tube—
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
What could it have been like to imagine the nature of an atom? How difficult is it to
produce a model of something that can’t be seen? The Think Tube allows students to
appreciate the challenges associated with things that cannot be directly observed. A
series of simple demonstrations will be performed using the Think Tube as students
record their observations and generate hypotheses. Kit includes step-by-step
instructions and a student worksheet master.

Anatomy of an Atom
An in-depth poster that looks at the inner workings of the atom. The atom is
“dissected” into its neutron, proton, and electron components. These, in turn, are
broken down into their building blocks, the quarks, the gluons, and the mesons. Each
particle is beautifully illustrated and is accompanied by detailed explanation of the
particle and its discovery. Poster measures 41" x 29".

AP6575 Anatomy of an Atom $34.70
Compound Interest™ A History of
the Atom: Theories and Models
How did we arrive at our current model of the atom? Have fun solidifying atomic
theory concepts with this colorful poster. Watch the history of the atom unfold from
Dalton’s model to Shrödinger’s! Laminated, 24" x 36".

Experiment with a Laser Pointer
1. In a darkened room, chalk dust in the path of the laser light will make the beam very
visible.
2. In a darkened room, direct the laser beam through an ice cube at various angles. Try the
same thing with a variety of colored liquids.
3. Use a hot nail to poke a hole in the side of a large plastic soda bottle. With your
finger over the hole fill the bottle with water and a small amount of milk. Let the
water stream out of the hole and direct the beam through the bottle and out the
water stream.
