Mercury Safety Aids
MerconTM Mercury Spill Control Kit
A mercury thermometer has just broken in your laboratory. What’s the best and safest way to clean up this mercury spill? Consider trying the MerconTM Mercury Spill Control Kit. The ingredients used in this kit are virtually 100% effective as a mercury suppressant and decontaminant. On contact with mercury, Mercon immediately stops mercury vapor from going into the air.
How does Mercon work? The Mercon solution creates a “shell” over the mercury, immediately stopping it from emitting vapor. Once the “shell” is in place, the active ingredients in Mercon chemically convert vapor-producing elemental mercury into a non-vapor-producing mercuric salt.
A detailed six-step cleanup plan using the Mercon Mercury Spill Kit can be found below. Kit includes:
MerconsprayTM—Conveniently reduces airborne mercury vapor to provide a safer environment for cleaning up spills. 250-mL size with spray nozzle.
MerconvapTM—A very effective liquid mercury vapor suppressant and decontaminant. Formulated to immediately stop emission of mercury vapor on contact.
Mercury Aspirator—A simple and easy-to-use device to pick up mercury off the floor or countertop. Tapered suction tip allows access to hard-to-get areas where mercury can hide.
MercontainerTM—A container for safe storage of mercury after a cleanup. Special sponge lining coated with a Mercon solution allows for repeated uses.
MerconwipesTM—Package of 70 towelettes pre-charged with Merconvap concentrate. Cleans and decontaminates mercury spill areas. Convenient and easy to use.
If you use mercury thermometers or have mercury metal in your school, this kit is an absolute must!

Zinc Dust
Once you have cleaned up the visible droplets of spilled mercury, how do you handle the remaining residue? One option is to sprinkle zinc dust onto the spill site. Zinc dust reacts with elemental mercury to form a very safe amalgam that is easy to handle.

Spill Control Kits
1. Blockofffromfoottrafficalargeareaaroundcenterofspillsite (approximately 6-foot radius). Check clothing and footwear for mercury and mercury debris. Remove contaminated footwear at edge of spill site.
2. Remove the MerconsprayTM from the spill kit and, while wearing gloves and goggles, proceed to spray the ambient zone above the spill radius. Spray generously (18–20 pumps) into the air starting at breathing level and working down toward the floor, concentrating on the actual spill itself. CAUTION: The floor surface may now be extremely slippery!
3. Remove the MerconvapTM bottle from the spill kit; replace ship- ping cap with squirt nozzle from kit. Cover all visible mercury with Merconvap, leaving a wide margin for any unseen droplets. Ensure that any cracks in flooring are saturated with Merconvap to suppress any droplets that may be out of sight. The spill is now safe to clean up.
4. Open MercontainerTM. Using the cleanup pad, carefully push the mercury droplets, broken glass and other contaminated debris toward the center of the spill to minimize mercury surface area. Using the Mercury Aspirator, collect the mercury and place it in the Mercontainer. The Mercury Aspirator is most effective when it has been emptied after each use. The Mercontainer may be reused, provided that the Mercontainer is no more than half full and there is a backup Mercontainer for larger spills. Note: Plastic Beral-type pipets work very well in picking up mercury droplets.
5. Decontaminate spill site. Reapply Merconvap liquid to former spill site and wipe up any residue with MerconwipesTM.
6. Dispose of used Mercontainers and any contaminated items as per local environmental authority regulations. Do not inciner- ate. Wipe shoes, gloves and any other contaminated items with Merconwipes.
