Demineralizer, Bantam®
Demineralizer, Barnstead, Bantam®
A demineralizer (deionizer) purifies water by ion exchange or can remove organic impurities by selective adsorption. By selecting the proper cartridge, water can be prepared for the laboratory. The Barnstead demineralizer is equipped with a conductivity meter to accurately indicate the quality of the water being produced. When the cartridge is exhausted, the meter moves into the red colored sector of the dial to alert you to change the cartridge. The demineralizer is connected to the water line using a provided 7-foot length of plastic tubing. Control valves are built into the base for inlet and outlet water. Unit can be used on a bench. Screws are provided for wall mounting. The demineralizer is shipped without a cartridge. Cartridges for this demineralizer are available separately.

Estimate Cartridge Life
To estimate cartridge life, you will need to determine the water quality in your area. To measure the hardness of your water quickly and easily, use Water Hardness Testing Paper. See page 78.
Demineralizer, Cartridges, Bantam®
Standard Cartridge
Cartridge removes approximately 1725 grains of dissolved salts (expressed as sodium chloride). The amount of quality water this cartridge produces depends on the character of the starting water. The higher the level of ionizable impurities, the lower the volume of quality water produced. For example, each cartridge will purify about 172 gallons of water containing 10 grains per gallon (as NaCl) of dis- solved solids.
Ultrapure Cartridge
Cartridge removes 760 grains of dissolved salts as sodium chloride. The quality of the water delivered is remarkably high (million ohm resistance) and is virtually free of carbon dioxide with a pH of 6.8 to 7.2. Select this cartridge only to fill the need for ultrapure quality water. Cartridge will purify about 76 gallons of water containing 10 grains per gallon (as NaCl) of dissolved solids.
Water Quality and pH
It is possible to produce a quality of water for which the pH cannot be measured. There is not enough ionizable mate- rial present to get a pH reading. In fact, if you are using pH paper, the indicator in the paper will affect the pH. We have a special Low Ion Test Kit for this circumstance. See page 77.

Distilled or Demineralized Water—
Which Do I Need?
Distilled water is free of inorganic materials, suspended impurities and most organic contaminants. To make or buy distilled water is expensive. While there may be laboratory applications where distilled water is required, in many applications, demineralized water will do just as well. Demineralized water, like distilled water, is free of inorganic materials and most suspended contaminants. If you need organic-free water, purchase a still or distilled water.
